Robert E Lee

He is one of the most famous American military leaders of the XIX century. A graduate of the Academy of West Point, Lee became an officer in the engineering troops, participated in the Mexican War, supervised the construction of forts and served as superintendent of West Point for two years.

When the Civil War began, he retired from the US Army and sided with the South. The governor of Virginia appointed him commander-in-chief of the army of the state of Virginia, then for some time he was military secretary under the president of the Confederation Davis. After injuring Johnston, the president appointed Lee to command the Northern Virginia Army.

Having accepted this assignment at a difficult time for the confederative forces, he managed in several battles to smash the superior forces of the army of the North and transfer the hostilities to the territory of the enemy. Lee twice led the invasion of the territory of the North, but both ended in failure.

After his death, Lee became one of the most popular figures in American history. He became a symbol of the post-war concept of the “lost cause of the South”, and then a symbol of honor and courage in a broad sense. From this point of view, he became a hero not only of the American South but of the whole of America.

Lee remained a mythological figure until the 1970s, when, in the wake of the civil rights movement, historians began to revise the traditional attitude towards his personality.
